In the article "All Work and No Play:Why Your Kids Are More Anxious,Depressed by Esther Entin talks about kids not having enough play time to play with their friends and how their free time is spent with school, their parents and other activies. This article also talks about because the kids are not playing and they are lacking play affects emotional, how its rise their anxiet and how its making them depress and its also causing attention and self control. The article also think kids sould have more fun time so they didnt have any of these affects,
In the article it had stated, "An article in the most recent issue of the American Journal of Play details not only how much children's play time has declined, but how this lack of play affects emotional development, leading to the rise of anxiety, depression, and problems of attention and self control." Another example from the text stated, "The researchers found that compared to 1981, children in 1997 spent less time in play and had less free time. They spent 18 percent more time at school, 145 percent more time doing school work, and 168 percent more time shopping with parents. The researchers found that, including computer play, children in 1997 spent only about eleven hours per week at play." The article also stated, "There has been a significant increase in anxiety and depression from 1950 to present day in teens and young adults and Gray cites several studies documenting this rise. One showed that five to eight times as many children and college students reported clinically significant depression or anxiety than 50 years ago and another documented a similar trend in the fourteen- to sixteen-year-old age group between 1948 and 1989." My last example from the text is, "Gray suggests that the reduced ability to regulate emotions may be a key factor in the development of some anxiety disorders. "Individuals suffering from anxiety disorders describe losing emotional control as one of their greatest fears. They are afraid of their own fear, and therefore small degrees of fear generated by mildly threatening situations lead to high degrees of fear generated by the person's fear of losing control." Adults who did not have the opportunity to experience and cope with moderately challenging emotional situations during play are more at risk for feeling anxious and overwhelmed by emotion-provoking situations in adult life."
I think the reseachers are right about kids spenting to much time with school, homework and other activties because now in the time kids do alot sports and other clubs and it does waste time that they could be outside playing with their friends. I also that kids to be outside playing becuase their nothing be social with the kids on the block and they not developing real friendships with people they would meet on their our.
This article reminds me of a time when I moved on a new block and because i spent so much time with school and i was also in a after school program i didnt get time to meet anyone on my block and became lonely and sad becuase i would be on the steps while the other kids was playing hide and seek. This reminds me of that time becuase when i finally had gotten friends to play with and I was outside playing, my grandmom would also make me go with her somewhere even if she had to go to the store I had to go. So I know how these kids felt.
Good post. Do you think you will be able to let your children (if you have any) spend a lot of time playing freely in your neighborhood? 95
